Lipogaine for Women Review: What’s in It and Does It Work?

Lipogaine for Women is one of the cheaper “enhanced” minoxidil products aimed at thinning hair in women. It is the same minoxidil you would find in a drugstore bottle, plus botanicals, vitamins and a liposome delivery claim, for about the price of a takeout dinner. Here is what is actually in it, what it can realistically do, and whether the regular or “Sensitive” version is the better buy.

What’s in It

Lipogaine for Women (original) uses 2% minoxidil, the standard FDA-approved strength of solution for women. The base is ethanol, propylene glycol and water. Added to that is a “DHT blocker” blend of saw palmetto, beta-sitosterol and biotinoyl tripeptide, plus a polyphenol, niacin, biotin, vitamins B6 and B12, and phosphatidylcholine. The brand says it uses a liposome delivery system. The list price is $25.

Lipogaine for Women (Sensitive) drops the propylene glycol and uses a glycerin base instead. Oddly, it also bumps the minoxidil to 3%. It is listed at $29.95.

Does It Work?

The part you can count on is the minoxidil. Topical minoxidil is FDA-approved for female pattern hair loss and has decades of trials behind it. For many women it slows shedding and thickens existing hair over several months. It works best on diffuse thinning and a widening part, and less well on areas that have been thin for years.

The extras are a different matter. Saw palmetto, beta-sitosterol and the vitamins have small or indirect evidence at best, and no independent trial has tested Lipogaine’s full formula. The brand advertises an “80% success rate,” but that is its own marketing claim, not a published study. Treat the add-ins as a possible bonus. You are really paying for the minoxidil.

Regular vs. Sensitive: Which to Buy

Original Sensitive
Minoxidil 2% 3%
Propylene glycol Yes No (glycerin base)
List price $25.00 $29.95
Best for First-time users with no scalp sensitivity Anyone who has itched or flaked on minoxidil before

If regular minoxidil has ever made your scalp itch, the Sensitive version is the obvious choice. Propylene glycol is the usual culprit. We cover the other PG-free options in minoxidil without propylene glycol. Keep in mind that 3% is a non-standard strength for women, so ask a doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure whether it suits you.

How to Use It

  • Apply up to 1 ml to a dry scalp in the thinning area, twice a day, at least 8 hours apart.
  • Part your hair and apply directly to the skin, not the hair.
  • Wash your hands afterward, and let it dry before lying on a pillow.

What to Expect and When

  • Weeks 2 to 8: you may notice extra shedding. It is common with minoxidil and usually temporary; the brand says it tends to settle within about 45 days.
  • Months 2 to 4: the earliest visible changes, if they are coming.
  • Month 6: a fair checkpoint. The brand itself advises stopping if you see no results by six months.

Take photos in the same light every month. Progress is slow enough that you will not notice it in the mirror.

Pros and Cons

Pros: uses a proven, FDA-approved active; affordable; a propylene glycol-free option is available; the dropper makes it easy to apply to a part line.

Cons: the add-in botanicals are unproven; twice-daily use is a commitment; results stop if you stop; the Sensitive version’s 3% strength is non-standard; minoxidil can cause unwanted facial hair if it drips or transfers onto your face.

Alternatives to Consider

A 5% minoxidil foam, applied once a day and made without propylene glycol, is the main alternative for women who want a simpler routine. If you are weighing a supplement instead, see Nutrafol vs. Lipogaine and cheaper Nutrafol alternatives.

Safety Notes

Do not use minoxidil if you are pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding. Sudden, patchy or rapid hair loss deserves a doctor’s visit first, since thyroid problems, iron deficiency and some medications can all cause shedding. Our guide to female hair loss causes covers what to rule out. Minoxidil is highly toxic to cats, so store it safely and let it dry before handling pets.

The Verdict

Lipogaine for Women is a good-value way to get minoxidil, with a sensitive-scalp version that many drugstore brands do not offer. Buy it for the minoxidil, not the botanicals, stick with it for six months, and pick the Sensitive formula if you have ever itched on minoxidil before.
